PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond), commonly known as “artificial diamond,” is considered the premium material for high-end wire drawing applications. Its working life is typically 15 to 25 times longer than that of tungsten carbide dies, significantly improving production efficiency while reducing long-term costs for manufacturers.
When it comes to PCD drawing die processing, We primarily utilize two distinct industrial methods depending on the required specifications.
Method 1: Precision Machining for Small Diameters
This method is ideally suited for machining small-diameter die holes where visual precision is paramount.
- The Advantage: It utilizes the transparency of the diamond, allowing technicians to observe the machining process—such as opening the entrance—more clearly.
- The Disadvantage: Because the diamond is extremely small, fixing it during processing can be challenging. Additionally, this method requires grinding off a larger portion of the diamond material compared to other techniques.
Method 2: Sintered Block Processing for Large Diameters
In this approach, the diamond and related powders are first sintered into blocks and inlaid before each stage of processing begins.
- The Advantage: We prefer this method for large-diameter holes because it saves significantly more diamond material (grinding out 2/3 to 4/5 less than the first method). It also allows for easier centering and a more convenient operation mode.
- The Disadvantage: It does not allow for direct visual observation of the die hole machining process during the early stages.
Maintenance and Regrinding: Extending Tool Life
During the drawing process, the surface of the die hole may eventually develop defects such as stripes, metal adhesion, or elliptical wear. When the sizing belt diameter increases beyond tolerance, the die is not necessarily scrapped.
- Sustainability: We recommend regrinding the die to a larger diameter for reuse. This process can be repeated multiple times until the diamond eventually develops cracks, maximizing the ROI of each tool.
